HAYES CARLL
by Ray Wylie Hubbard

i had been reading some of the french poets from the late 1800’s…rimbaud, verlaine, and baude laire and was not only impressed by their writing but also their lifestyles which consisted of a lot of drinking, wild sex and all night debauchery. for some reason, the fi rst time i met hayes i thought to myself, “this is how they must have smelled.”

SAD SONGS OF TEXAS
Hard Times

Tax day is right around the corner. In that spirit we thought for this installment of Sad Songs of Texas, we’d compile a playlist for you of songs that celebrate that empty pocket feeling. That “where did it all go” spirit.

STINGAREE
Liz Foster-Durham
Combine the beach, beer, fish tacos, good people and some of the best singer/songwriters in the music world today and you’ve got the Stinga ree Music Festival. Being the huge Hayes Carll fan that I am, I try to attend . . .

STEVE RIPLEY
by Mike McClure
Steve Ripley never fails to amaze me. Most people are familiar with his voice from hit songs with the Tractors, but I’m not so sure many people know what a charmed musical life he has been through. I always heard his name when I was hang ing around Stillwater. Mostly it was talk about his work at The Church . . .

JIM LAUDERDALE
by Lynne Margolis
Once a year, Jim Lauderdale puts on one of his cool velvet ‘n’ rhinestone Western suits and cracks jokes for a couple of hours in front of a music industry audience as host of the annual Americana Music Association Honors and Awards. He’s had the gig for about four years, the last three of which . . .

ASK MOTHER HUBBARD
by Judy Hubbard
Q: Why do I always have to sit through some crappy opening band to see who I really want to see? Bo Garland, TX
A: Dear Bo, So the bar owner can sell more booze. If the headliner starts at 11:00, the club owners want drinkers to get there earlier and spend more money so they book an opener to . . .

AARON WATSON
by Sam Seifert & Ray Benson

I first heard of Aaron Watson and his music when my dad was producing Aaron's The Honky Tonk Kid record. A fan of Texas Country music myself, I grew as a part of the young fan base that listened to and followed artists such as Pat Green, Robert Earl Keen, Cory Morrow, Owen Temple and Jack Ingram. . .

BRANDON RHYDER
by Betsy Vanderford
From his struggles to find himself musically, becoming a father, to sky
rocketing to the top of the charts over night, this is a man of true
convictions. He focuses on the future, but still acknowledges the past. He
slowly transforms, all while maintaining his inner qualities. . .

GRAND OLE OPRY
by Sunny Sweeney
The cool thing about playing the Grand Ole Opry is that you get to just stand backstage with these country superstars standing right beside you waiting for their turn to go on. I have gotten the chance to meet and talk to Porter . . .

CODY GILL BAND
by Caleb Hooper
When I was first approached to write this thing I was told to be honest and straight-forward with what it’s like to be in a young Texas band. Well here’s the truth: It’s the most fun I’ve ever had be ing frustrated all the time. . .
